Brian and Liz Guz have supported the Heinz C. Prechter Bipolar Research Program at the University of Michigan Frances and Kenneth Eisenberg and Family Depression Center since their son Michael’s death in 2009. In addition, Liz Guz established ELLA Designs Jewelry in 2012 to increase awareness about bipolar disorder and donates 50% of all proceeds to the Prechter Program.
The mission of the Heinz C. Prechter Bipolar Research Program is research in bipolar disorder to predict and improve outcomes, discover the mechanisms that contribute to the illness, and develop innovative treatments.
The Vision: Personalized, evidence-based treatment of bipolar disorder will prevent recurrences, so that every individual with bipolar disorder may lead a healthy and productive life.
Brian and Liz support this research because they see it as the best opportunity to stop others from suffering the kind of pain that Michael experienced. And, it is a way for them to help prevent other families from experiencing the unbearable grief of unnecessarily losing a loved one.
Michael would have been 25 years old on March 27, 2017. To honor his birthday, the Guz’s established an endowment to provide a permanent legacy for Michael and ensure ongoing support of the innovative bipolar research at the University of Michigan, specifically of the Prechter Program’s stem cell program, which is doing groundbreaking research.
